KarkidakaVavu falls in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam. The day is a sacred one for Hindus in the state as it is believed to be the night of the gods. By observing ‘Vavu Bali‘, they pay homage to thedeparted souls of their ancestors and seek their blessings. On the day of Amavasi, people gather on riverbanks and beaches to offer bali.People believe that the departed souls attain moksha (liberation) if the ritualistic homage is performed on that day. On this day,in most households in Kerala, a special preparation of steamed rice called ‘Vavuada’ is prepared. This year, Vavubali was conducted on July 17th.
